Getting Started with Mobile Wallet Pass

Overview

A mobile wallet functions as a digital version of a physical wallet. Like its physical counterpart, a mobile wallet can hold loyalty cards, coupons, gift cards -- just digital versions of these items.

Unlike physical wallet items though, the information presented on a Mobile Wallet Pass can be dynamic. Members can be informed in real-time about their available coupons, and the geolocation capabilities of the program can notify them about Offers that are available in their nearest store.

Loyalty's Mobile Wallet Pass leverages Apple and Google's built-in wallet apps to deliver content, thereby allowing marketers to reach their Members on their devices in a manner similar to Push Notifications, without the expense of creating a branded mobile app. A Mobile Wallet Pass also provides a better customer experience by making it easier to find all the cards and coupons in the device wallet rather than in the brand's mobile app or attached to an email.

Note: The 25.7.0 release of Loyalty enabled support for Apple Wallet Passes where a Member can now install the pass on multiple iOS devices, or on a mixture of iOS and Android devices. The Member will automatically receive updates to the pass on all devices on which they have installed the pass.

The roll out of this new functionality required a migration to a new back-end database structure within the Loyalty platform. Member data should seamlessly transition to this new structure. However, it's possible a Member could encounter a scenario where their passes are not automatically updating. The solution to this scenario is for the Member to toggle off the "Enable auto-update" feature on their device, then toggle the feature back on. Once this step is performed, then all devices will receive updates to the wallet pass. As a best practice, we recommend that you proactively alert Members with messaging, either in the wallet pass itself or on your Member portal, describing this solution. This information should also be communicated to your internal support teams responsible for fielding issues reported from Members.

Wallet Pass Types

Loyalty offers two types of Wallet Passes to meet different business needs.

Important: Pass types and their configuration elements are determined by Apple and Google Wallets, not by Loyalty.

Note: The Wallet Pass types Event Ticket and Generic/Gift Cards are currently not supported in Loyalty.

Store Card / Loyalty Pass

The Store Card / Loyalty Pass type of Wallet Pass is the primary pass type for Member engagement. It enables the following features:

  • Display membership information (Member identification, points balance, tier status, etc.)

  • Promote Member-exclusive pricing

  • Provide store credit

  • Display available Offers

Please see Create a Store Card / Loyalty Pass for details.

Note: This type of Mobile Wallet Pass appears as a Store Card on Apple devices and a Loyalty Pass on Google devices.

Coupon / Offer

The simpler Coupon / Offer type of Wallet Pass is available to both Members and Visitors, and is designed to deliver promotional content such as:

  • Holiday promotions

  • Flash sales with limited discounts

  • Seasonal clearance events with special access to discounts

  • New product launch discount

  • Event-based marketing

  • VIP early access pass to an annual sale

  • Exclusive event invitation with discount for new store opening

Please see Create a Coupon / Offer for details.

Note: This type of Mobile Wallet Pass appears as a Coupon on Apple devices and an Offer on Google devices.

Prerequisites

This section describes the required prerequisites for using the Mobile Wallet Pass feature in Loyalty.

Your Marigold Professional Services team will enable the Mobile Wallet Pass feature by creating connections from your loyalty program to the native wallets. This process includes the required security set up so that your loyalty program is a trusted source to send digital cards to your Members' digital wallets.

Landing Page

Members must have a way to download your Mobile Wallet Pass to their digital wallets. Typically, distribution of digital passes is managed by means of a webpage, referred to as a "landing page." This landing page can be:

  • Created and hosted by Marigold.

  • Created and hosted by you within your own web server. Marigold's Professional Services can assist your IT personnel with this process as part of the initial setup.

  • Created and hosted as a webpage within the Marigold Grow platform. A technical resource from your organization can perform this step, or you can request Marigold's Professional Services team to perform this step on your behalf.

  • Created and hosted as a Content Page within the Marigold Loyalty platform. A technical resource from your organization can perform this step, or you can request Marigold's Professional Services team to perform this step on your behalf.

Content Tokens

The content of a Mobile Wallet Pass can optionally be personalized to show, for example, a Member's name, current point total, or Offer expiration date. Content personalization is managed through the use of Content Tokens, which must be configured before you begin creating the Wallet Pass content. For more information, please see Content Tokens.
